For over 20 years, BlackHawk has shared a unique sense of harmony with their voices, songs and fans. It’s a harmony that has sold over 7 million albums, scored some of the most distinctive country radio hits of the ‘90s, and still draws tens of thousands of fans to their electrifying live performances. Today the band continues to honor its past as it forges its future, and does it all with a commitment that takes their music – and the harmony – to a whole new level.
Co-founders Henry Paul, Van Stephenson, and Dave Robbins each brought diverse musical backgrounds to the group. Paul, formerly of Southern Rock legends The Outlaws, blended his rock influence with the Nashville songwriting prowess of Stephenson and Robbins. Their vision was to create country music infused with pop sensibilities and three-part harmonies reminiscent of The Eagles and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Hits like “Goodbye Says It All,” “Every Once in a While,” and “There You Have It” defined their success, despite industry resistance to their unconventional style.
BlackHawk faced a heartbreaking turning point when Van Stephenson was diagnosed with melanoma in 1999. Before his passing in 2001, he urged his band mates to continue making music and to help raise awareness for cancer research. Honoring his wishes, Paul and Robbins carried on, supporting the Van Stephenson Memorial Cancer Fund and keeping BlackHawk’s legacy alive with new albums and relentless touring.
Today, BlackHawk remains a force in country music, drawing loyal fans of all ages. They continue to release new music, including “Brothers of the Southland” and an acoustic greatest hits collection, while delivering powerful live performances. “Now more than ever,” Paul reflects, “that’s the true legacy of BlackHawk”—a commitment to their music, their fans, and the harmony that defines them.
